For many people, Spring means one thing. Baseball! And in Arizona, it means the Cactus League. Fifteen Major League Baseball teams play in the Cactus League in and around the Phoenix area.
The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community operates the Salt River Fields at Talking Stick. The facility is just east of Scottsdale with plenty of seats in the shade for enjoying sunny games of baseball. Four thousand parking spaces offer ample room for baseball enthusiasts and visitors. The rooftop is reminiscent of a Native American ramada (temporary roof shelter with no walls). It is also the “first LEED Gold-certified sports venue of its kind in the United States.” This facility is just one of ten represented in the Arizona Cactus League.
ARIZONA CACTUS LEAGUE ASSOCIATION
The Cactus League Association was formed in 1947 to help establish good business relationships with Major League baseball teams in order to serve their spring training needs. Currently, the following teams are part of Arizona’s Cactus League spring training season:
2018 CACTUS LEAGUE SPRING TRAINING
The 2018 Cactus League Spring Training calendar is full of game dates and times, not only at the Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, but also Camelback Ranch, Sloan Park, Goodyear Ballpark, Surprise Recreation Campus, Maryvale Baseball Park, Tempe Diablo Stadium, Scottsdale Stadium, Peoria Sports Complex, and the Hohokam Stadium.
ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS
The Diamondbacks have games at Salt River Fields all throughout the month of March. The D-backs, as they are commonly referred to, are an exciting professional baseball team. They have been part of the National League, West Division, since 1998. They won a world series championship in 2001.
COLORADO ROCKIES
The Colorado Rockies are another exciting professional baseball team, and they have been part of the National League, West Division, since 1993. The Rockies won one National League Championship in 2007 and they did so in spectacular fashion, winning 14 of their last 15 games to qualify for a Wild Card position.
CHICAGO CUBS
A perennial fan favorite formerly known as the "Loveable Losers" the National League's Chicago Cubs won the 2016 World Series for the first time in 108 years! The Cubs opened Sloan Park in Mesa in 2014 and is primarily used by the Cubs for Spring Training and the Arizona League Cubs. Sloan Park is the largest spring training stadium with capacity of 15,000 and routinely sells out games.
